Teaching Literacy K-2 and Special Ed French in secondary

Finally, after a long time working in jobs that were not really in my field, I was chosen for a position teaching primary and secondary school students at a school in Val D'Or, Quebec. Why was I out of teaching? Well, there are many reasons. I had a car accident in 2010 which left me with 6 broken ribs and a punctured lung. After that, I needed time off to recuperate. I settled in a town which was closer to the the hospital. There was no hospital on the reserve where I was teaching before. After settling there, I found work substitute teaching and teaching business English and everyday English to adults.I was working within a school board but I didn't get much work. I also worked at the school daycare sometimes. Since they had their full time staff,  I replaced at times when they needed me.

I needed to supplement my salary by working as a cashier. After so many years of teaching, yes minimum wage hurts but when you realize that you can budget and pay your bills and survive, that's all that counts.No. Let me rephrase that. What counts is to be healthy and happy and strive to be all that you can and want to be in your life.

I always wanted to pursue my artistic side. I graduated from university in Fine Arts and have a degree in art education. I will keep painting and exhibiting whenever I have time. I have a lot of artwork and if you'd like you can check out my Facebook page or Etsy shop "Judydcreates".

Now I'm back in the teaching environment and it's a very enriching experience. I started in November 2016. At first, I was observing the teachers and students to get a feel for what was going on in ELA in primary school setting. In secondary, I had been replacing a Special Ed. technician who was on temporary leave.  When he came back, they decided to have me work with the students who needed help in French since he was better at teaching the other subjects. Since the position was very part-time, I asked for more work in the school. The principal obliged. She said that there was a grant for hiring a support teacher for literacy at the early grade levels in primary. I was so happy. Now I'm teaching reading, phonetic awareness, vocabulary to kindergarten-grade 2 (small groups).  I'm also a part-time Special Ed. Technician in the French sector at secondary level.
